West Rogers Park crash leaves 5 injured

A two-vehicle crash early Thursday morning in West Rogers Park left five people injured, including a 14-year-old boy who was critically hurt.

The backstory:

The crash happened just after midnight when a sedan heading north on Albany Avenue disregarded a traffic sign and collided with an SUV traveling east on Rosemont Avenue, according to police. 

The 25-year-old driver of the sedan sustained scratches and was taken to Lutheran General Hospital where he was listed in good condition. A 17-year-old boy who was a passenger in the sedan declined medical treatment.

A 56-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman who were riding in the SUV both reported pain and were transported to St. Francis Hospital and Illinois Masonic Hospital, respectively, for observation. A 15-year-old girl suffered bruising and stiffness in the crash and was taken to Lurie Children's Hospital in good condition. 

The most seriously injured was a 14-year-old boy in the rear passenger seat, who sustained significant trauma and was transported to St. Francis Hospital in critical condition.

Police said airbags were deployed in both vehicles. The driver of the sedan will receive citations, according to police. 

The Major Accident Investigation Unit is reviewing the crash.
