Video captures intense police shootout after suspect fires on Jewish man near synagogue

Video released Thursday shows an October police-involved shooting in West Rogers Park, where a 22-year-old shot a Jewish man heading to a synagogue before exchanging fire with police.

The incident, which occurred on Oct. 26, began near the 6800 block of North Washtenaw Avenue.

Authorities say Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi approached a 39-year-old man walking to a nearby synagogue and shot him in the shoulder without warning.

The victim has since recovered.

When first responders arrived at the scene, Abdallahi allegedly returned and fired multiple rounds at officers and paramedics from various positions.

Footage shows the tense moments as police took cover and returned fire. While an ambulance was struck, no officers or firefighters were injured.

After an intense 30-minute search, police located Abdallahi and critically wounded him during an exchange of gunfire. He was taken to a hospital and later taken into custody.

Charges Against Abdallahi

Abdallahi faced an extensive list of felony charges, including six counts of attempted first-degree murder, seven counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm at law enforcement, and one count of aggravated battery with a firearm.

Authorities later added charges of terrorism and hate crimes.

Abdallahi’s Death in Custody

On Nov. 25, Abdallahi was found dead in his cell at Cook County Jail.

Officials say he died by suicide, hanging himself during routine security checks. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office reported no prior indication of suicide risk, and an autopsy is being conducted.

In a statement, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office said: "The incident underscores the tragic nature of violence and its ripple effects. We will continue to review protocols to ensure the safety and well-being of those in custody."
