Illinois man arrested after allegedly shooting girlfriend, attacking police officer

Adrian Olivares | Lake County Jail

A 20-year-old Zion man was arrested early Tuesday morning after allegedly shooting his girlfriend and attacking a police officer, authorities said.

The backstory:

Officers responded to a home in the 1400 block of 19th Street around 3:10 a.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting a woman had been shot, according to the Zion Police Department.

When officers arrived, they initially received no response at the door. After several minutes, Adrian Olivares opened the door and confirmed his 24-year-old girlfriend had been shot.

Police saw the woman inside the home with a gunshot wound to her upper torso. When officers tried to enter to provide medical aid, Olivares allegedly blocked their path and refused to comply with commands. As officers moved in to take him into custody, he allegedly struck one officer in the head, rendering them temporarily unconscious, police said. Other officers took Olivares into custody without injury.

The wounded woman was treated at the scene before being transported to Condell Hospital, where she remains in stable condition. The injured officer was treated for a concussion at a local hospital and later released.

Detectives obtained a search warrant for the home and found three guns, two of which were reported stolen, as well as a fired casing, cocaine packaged for sale, 12.8 pounds of cannabis and Xanax. Police said no one in the home was legally allowed to possess firearms.

Investigators believe Olivares shot his girlfriend, though his intent remains unclear.

Olivares was charged with:

  • One count of aggravated battery to a police officer causing great bodily harm
  • Two counts of aggravated battery to a police officer
  • One count of possession of cocaine with intent to sell
  • One count of possession of cannabis with intent to sell
  • One count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance
  • One count of reckless discharge of a firearm
  • Three counts of unlawful use of a weapon
