Elon Musk, who owns Twitter, set a deadline for verified users to buy a premium Twitter subscription or lose the checks on their profiles.

The change will end the current verification system Twitter launched in 2009 to prevent impersonations of high-profile accounts.

A hacker was reportedly attempting to sell the data of hundreds of millions of users that was stolen in a Twitter breach.

Twitter said users who “sign up now” for the new “Twitter Blue with verification” can receive the blue check next to their names “just like the celebrities, companies and politicians you already follow.”
