Chicago weather: 2024 ends with a soaking

Chicago opens the last day of the year on a wet note with rain over most of the area. This will likely continue off and on much of the day, impacting the NHL Winter Classic at Wrigley Field.

Temperatures are going to max out in the low 40s. Tonight there can be a period of light snow mixing in that could even fall right as New Year’s rings in.

Tomorrow will be chilly with a chance for a couple of flurries from a mostly cloudy sky. High temperatures will be close to freezing on Thursday. A small snow system will scoot through southern portions of Chicagoland with minimal impact, but there can be a dusting, especially south of Interstate 80.

It will turn colder Friday, Saturday and Sunday when highs will only be in the 20s and lows between 10 and 15 degrees. The big question is will there be a snowstorm on Sunday night and/or Monday.

The latest computer models show a storm but way south of Chicago meaning we would only get a glancing blow from it and not a disruptive mega blizzard. There is definitely growing confidence that all of next week will be much colder than we have seen in a long time, and if the snowstorm somehow does materialize here that would likely make conditions even colder. Stay tuned.
