Chicago weather: Rain arrives tonight, but how does New Year's Eve look?

An approaching low-pressure system will bring rain to Chicagoland as early as this evening, lasting through tonight and into Tuesday. Lows will only drop a few degrees into the mid to upper 30s.

Tuesday will have steady temperatures in the mid to upper 30s with gusty northern winds. Rain is expected to last through the morning and then taper off from northwest to southeast during the afternoon and evening. Wet snow may mix in at times on Tuesday.

The first day of 2025 looks fairly seasonal with highs near 30 under partly cloudy skies. Thursday will be similar with skies becoming partly to mostly cloudy during the day with highs around 30.

Colder air is set to arrive on Friday and into the weekend. Friday and Saturday will start in the teens and only warm into the low to mid 20s. Skies will be mostly sunny to partly cloudy.

A storm system will likely move through the Great Lakes Region sometime Sunday into Monday, but there are still questions about whether it will directly impact the Chicago area. There is the potential for snow from Sunday into Monday, but we'll have to wait a few more days before the forecast becomes clearer.
