Chicago weather: Snow, freezing drizzle to create dangerous travel conditions

Lake-effect snow is going to be the worry most of the day in Chicago and even into the early evening hours as well.

In addition to the snow, there are also pockets of freezing drizzle, adding to the dangerous travel conditions this morning. A narrow, but sometimes intense band of snow will snake its way down the lake, not only impacting communities immediately adjacent to it.

Overall accumulations will vary widely across the lake-effect area with some spots picking up several inches while others might get an inch or two. The lake effect will eventually move out of Chicagoland tonight, leaving behind cold conditions for the rest of the week with highs generally in the 20s and lows in the teens with single digits found where the snow pack is thicker.

There is a small chance of light snow on Friday. It does not look like a big storm at this juncture and there is no sign of a January thaw anytime soon.

Snow and icy conditions prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to halt landings and departures at O'Hare Airport around 6:30 a.m.

The ground stop is in effect for O'Hare until 7:45 a.m., officials said. A ground delay will also be in effect until 10 a.m. with delays averaging 48 minutes.

Nearly 100 flights have been canceled at O'Hare today with average delays lasting under 15 minutes. Midway Airport has reported 28 canceled flights.
