Arlington Heights board unanimously approves property tax deal with Bears
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - The Arlington Heights Board of Trustees has unanimously approved a measure that clears a significant hurdle for the Chicago Bears to potentially build a new stadium in the northwest suburb.
The vote solidifies a settlement between the Bears and three local school districts, setting the team's annual tax bill for their 326-acre Arlington Heights property at $3.6 million as long as the land remains undeveloped.
The property, formerly the Arlington International Racecourse, was purchased by the Bears for $197 million in February 2023.
While this agreement resolves a long-running property tax dispute and lays the groundwork for future development, the Bears have reiterated that their current focus remains on exploring a new stadium at Chicago's lakefront.
Village Mayor Thomas Hayes assured residents they will have ample opportunity to weigh in if the Bears shift their attention to Arlington Heights, noting that the board would only agree to a plan that's a net positive for the village.
The boards of the three school districts involved are also expected to formally review the proposal on Wednesday and Thursday.
While the Bears’ future stadium location remains uncertain, the Arlington Heights decision is a critical step in keeping the suburban option viable.
