Bettie Jones, accidental victim of police shooting, laid to rest

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News/ STMW) - On the city's West Side, family and friends of Bettie Jones, the 55-year-old woman accidentally killed by Chicago Police on the day after Christmas, said their final goodbyes to the community activist. 

The visitation for Jones was held Tuesday evening at People Funeral Home, 5018 W. Chicago Ave.

Jones' funeral was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, 4301 W. Washington Blvd.

Jones was shot and killed by a Chicago police officer responding to a report of a domestic disturbance in the 4700 block of West Erie St. She lived downstairs from the apartment of Antonio LeGrier. His son, 19-year-old Quintonio LeGrier, also was shot and killed. Police said the responding officer was confronted by someone who was being “combative” but admitted the shooting of Jones, who opened her door to let officers into the building, was a mistake.

Jones was the mother of five and the grandmother of ten. She worked in a local bakery and supported the work of the Action Now community advocate group.

“Bettie had just had a spirit filled time of fellowship on Christmas Day, and she had purposes to renew her faith on the last Sunday of the year”, said Rev. Marshall Hatch, senior pastor of New Mount Pilgrim Church and chairman of the Leader’s Network. “We find it hard to believe that was killed by the police, while trying to help the police and her neighbor. We will not rest until we find out what really happened to Bettie. We will celebrate her life, even though we have a lot of unanswered questions.”
