Development to start at historic Chicago Post office

CHICAGO (AP) - The city of Chicago says a judge's ruling means development will go forward with new owners of the massive and long-vacant old Chicago Post Office.
The city said Wednesday that 601W Companies LLC will immediately start renovation and restoration work. The project is expected to take about five years. The city and new owners have an agreement that establishes deadlines to replace the roof, install new elevators, restore the historic lobby and install new electric, plumbing, heating and ventilation.
The new owners' plans include using the building as offices with a rooftop park and landscaping along the Chicago River that will be open to the public.
The post office closed in 1995. It was built in the 1920s and 1930s and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
