Englewood Flyover to make things tricky on Dan Ryan for several weeks

If the Jane Byrne Circle Interchange project isn’t enough of a headache for drivers on the Dan Ryan, overnight lane shifts and lane closures are being added farther south for work on Metra’s Englewood Flyover bridge project.

Starting Saturday and continuing through Aug. 7, construction will be done in phases, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.

From July 18-20, all inbound traffic will be confined to one express lane between 71st and 63rd streets, and will not be accessible via the ramps from the Skyway.

Skyway traffic will have to access the Dan Ryan through a detour: Take the State Street exit, go north on State to 55th Street, and west on 55th onto the Ryan.

From July 25-31, traffic will have to use local lanes, as all inbound and outbound express lanes will be closed.

And from Aug. 1-7, all outbound local lanes will be closed between 55th and 69th, with traffic shifted to the express lanes. Entrances to the outbound Ryan will be closed at 47th, 55th and 63rd, though traffic will be able to enter at 43rd and 67th. Traffic to the Skyway from the express lanes will be maintained with periodic stops.

During all of the work, inbound changes will be in effect from midnight to 7 a.m. on Saturday nights and midnight until 5 a.m. on all other nights. Outbound changes will be in effect from 1-7 a.m. on Saturday night and 1-6 a.m. all other nights.

The changes are for the construction of the flyover, a new rail bridge over the Ryan and Norfolk Southern freight tracks near 63rd Street that opened last fall.
