More than two dozen geese found with lead poisoning in DuPage County

DUPAGE COUNTY - More than two dozen Canada geese in DuPage County were found with lead poisoning.

Eleven of them have died. 

The situation came to light when volunteers at the Lombard Lagoon noticed two dead geese and several others appearing ill.

The DuPage Wildlife Conservation Center later confirmed the birds were affected by lead poisoning, with some geese ingesting hundreds of lead pellets.

Between November and December, the center treated more than twice the typical number of annual lead poisoning cases, raising concerns about a potential widespread contamination issue.

The exact source of the lead pellets remains unknown, but the Chicago Bird Collision Monitors are actively investigating to identify the origin.

Amid the troubling trend, there is a glimmer of hope. The conservation center reported successfully treating one of the geese, which has since been released back into the wild.
