Mother and boyfriend charged in shooting death of 3-year-old

A Detroit mother and her boyfriend has been charged with the death of a 3-year-old.

Kyrie Boyd was shot in the face inside an apartment on Rossiter Wednesday night. He later died at St. John's Hospital after the shooting.

On Friday his mother, Kinesha Boyd, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and lying to a peace officer in a violent crime investigation.

Kinesha's boyfriend, Demetrius Peals has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, child abuse second degree and tampering with evidence in a criminal case - the last of which is punishable by more than 10 years.

Peals is also charged with felony firearm.  Wednesday night he fled the scene after carrying Kyrie from the apartment that night, before turning himself in. He had a criminal record that included breaking and entering.

Kinisha Boyd had previously told police that someone drove by firing shots. However, police say the evidence does not match her story.  Kyrie was inside the apartment at the time he shot himself with his 1-year-old sibling there, who was not injured.
