Life imitating art? How 'The Simpsons' may have predicted Harris' presidential run

Fans of "The Simpsons," the longest-running animated series in the U.S., believe the show came very close to predicting the future regarding the current race for the White House.

The sitcom's longtime showrunner and writer Al Jean posted a side-by-side picture of the show's animated character "Lisa" and Vice President Kamala Harris.

The two are even wearing a similar purple suit.

"@TheSimpsons ‘prediction’ I’m proud to be a part of," Jean wrote in his caption.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the snapshot of Lisa is from the show's 11th season titled, "Bart to the Future," where Lisa becomes president. Furthermore, Lisa became president after then-fictional president Donald Trump devastated the country's economy. The episode aired in March 2000.

The snapshot of Harris was from January 2021, when she was inaugurated as Vice President.

Fast forward to today, Harris is now running for president after President Joe Biden announced he would not seek reelection. Harris' campaign comes more than three years after Trump left the White House.

Biden dropped out of the 2024 race for the White House on Sunday, ending his bid for reelection after a disastrous debate with Donald Trump that raised doubts about the incumbent’s fitness for office. The unprecedented announcement, delivered less than four months before the election, immediately upended a campaign that both political parties view as the most consequential in generations.

The president — intent on serving out the remainder of his term in office — quickly Harris to take on Trump and encouraged his party to unite behind her, making her the party’s instant favorite for the nomination at its August convention in Chicago.
